Why convert HEIC to JPG?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It stores the same quality as JPG in roughly half the file size, which is great for your phone storage — but terrible for compatibility. Windows 10 and 11 cannot open HEIC files without an extra codec from the Microsoft Store, many older Android phones choke on them, most websites and email clients refuse them as attachments, and plenty of desktop software — from Photoshop plugins to office printers — simply does not recognize the format.

JPG, by contrast, works everywhere: every browser, every operating system, every social network, every printer manufactured in the last twenty years. Converting HEIC to JPG is the fastest way to make your iPhone photos universally usable — for sharing, uploading, printing, or archiving.

How to convert HEIC to JPG (3 steps)

  1. Select your file. Click the box above or drag a .heic / .heif photo into it. The file is read directly by your browser.
  2. Choose quality and format. Pick JPG for maximum compatibility (or PNG if you need lossless). The default 92% quality is visually identical to the original for almost every photo.
  3. Convert and download. Hit "Convert to JPG" and save the result. The whole process usually takes a few seconds, even for large photos.

Private by design: nothing is uploaded

Most online converters make you upload your photos to their servers — where they can be stored, scanned, or leaked. This tool works differently: conversion happens entirely inside your browser using open-source WebAssembly technology. Your photos never travel over the network, which means it is safe for sensitive images (IDs, documents, family photos) and it works even on slow connections. You can verify this yourself by opening your browser's network tab while converting.

HEIC vs JPG: what changes in the conversion?

HEIC uses the HEVC/H.265 video codec to compress still images, which is why files are so small. JPG uses the older DCT-based compression from 1992. When converting, the image is decoded from HEVC and re-encoded as JPG. At 92% quality or above, the difference is invisible to the human eye in normal viewing — you would need to zoom to 400% and compare pixel-by-pixel to spot any change. The trade-off is file size: expect the JPG to be roughly 1.5–2× larger than the original HEIC. If you need the smallest possible file, convert first and then run the result through an image compressor.

One thing JPG cannot preserve is HEIC's extra features: Live Photo motion, depth maps, and burst sequences are iPhone-specific and have no JPG equivalent. The converter exports the main still image — which is what 99% of people actually want when they search for "heic to jpg".

Frequently asked questions

Is this HEIC to JPG converter really free?

Yes — unlimited conversions, no account, no watermark, no "free trial" tricks. The tool runs entirely in your browser, so there is no server cost per conversion to pass on to you.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Your HEIC file is decoded and re-encoded locally by JavaScript running in your browser tab. Nothing is sent anywhere. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads (except the one-time library download) and it will still work.

Will I lose image quality converting HEIC to JPG?

At the default 92% quality setting, no visible loss. HEIC is already a lossy format, so the conversion is one lossy step to another — but at high quality settings the difference is imperceptible. Choose 100% if you want maximum fidelity (larger file).

Why can't Windows open my iPhone photos?

Windows does not ship with the HEVC codec needed to decode HEIC files. Microsoft sells it as a paid extension in the Store. Converting to JPG sidesteps the problem entirely — JPG opens natively on every version of Windows.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?

Yes — select up to 5 HEIC photos at once (click, drag, or paste). They convert one after another, and each photo gets its own download link when done.

What's the difference between HEIC and HEIF?

HEIF is the container standard; HEIC is Apple's implementation of it using HEVC compression. In practice, iPhone photos labeled .HEIC and .HEIF are the same thing, and this tool handles both.

Does it work on Android / Mac / Windows?

Yes — anything with a modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari). The conversion runs on your device regardless of operating system.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG instead?

Yes — switch the format dropdown to PNG before converting. PNG is lossless but produces larger files; use it when you need pixel-perfect output, e.g. for graphics with text.
